WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONEBetter Conditions:
We need to guarantee nuclear plant workers with better working conditions because workers are allowed to be exposed to up to 100 mSv of radiation (normal conditions would be 1mSv). We also need to give workers more training and explanation of safety risks needed. Additionally, shelters housing workers should be in areas with lower radiation levels because currently, they are too close to danger zones. Monitor:
We must use better ways to monitor the disposal of radioactive wastes. It was reported that there were 300 tons of radioactive water dumped into the Pacific. Moreover, we need to create storage spaces for storing radioactive wastes safely, repair the leaks in the radioactive sites, and examine trontium levels before disposal. TEPCO:
The government needs to recognize the disaster as an issue and stop pretending there is no problem. Japan needs to reach out for international help. The government needs to intervene because we cannot reply on TEPCO alone. TEPCO needs to avoid mistakes, face errors, needs to raise funds, spend more towards fixing errors, and cannot continue to patch problems temporarily. The disaster could have been avoided or at least not as bad if TEPCO had undergone proper management of the plant. Disposal:
We need to find proper method to dispose of fuel rods. Furthermore, we need to stop denying the effects and stop delaying the removal. We need an international group of expert engineers should take over since TEPCO doesn’t know how to handle the removal of the potentially dangerous fuel rods. Awareness:We must raise awareness of Fukushima in schools and media because the disaster is no longer considered a current event. It is rarely talked about and almost forgotten, but it is most definitely still an issue. We need to stop the media blackout and let the world know what is going on instead of hiding the issue. If it is known that it is an international threat, maybe there will be more efforts to fix the area. We need to incorporate the Fukushima event into the school curriculum.

HOW YOU CAN HELPAid:
We can start helping by encouraging United States and United Nations intervention. Fukushima needs help from other countries of the world because it is a global problem, which eventually affects the whole world. Fish caught on west coast has radiation from Fukushima site. We can aid the abandoned animals in the evacuated areas by offering to euthanize trapped animals We need to participate in protests, petitions, and demonstrations. By organizing protest movements, signing petitions urging for Japanese government intervention, and helping demonstrations, we can gain publicity from news and others. Social Media:
We need to use social media to raise awareness. By using Facebook, all social networks, and even word of mouth, we can allow other people to learn about Fukushima Donate:
We need to help by donating to causes that helps victims of the disaster. There are foundations like Fukushima Kids Summer Camp, which anyone can donate to by phone by texting “GIVE 10634” to 80088 ($10). |
